In order to deeply study and implement the spirit of the speech of Xi Jinping at the Symposium on Cultural Inheritance and Development, a theoretical seminar on Building Modern Civilization of the Chinese Nation and an exchange meeting on the evaluation of Marxist theoretical achievements were successfully held in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, on July 28-30, 2023, which was co-hosted by the School of Marxism of Anhui University of Finance and Economics and the Frontiers of Foreign Social Sciences Magazine. More than 50 experts and scholars from Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Anhui Province, together with the journal China Social Science, Journal of Jianghai, Jiangsu Social Science, Journal of Nanjing University (Philosophy-Humanities-Social Science), Journal of Southeast University (Philosophy-Social Science), Nanjing Social Science, Sea of Learning, Academia, Jianghuai Tribune, Journal of Nanjing Agricultural University (Social Science), Journal of China University of Mining and Technology (Social Science),Frontiers of Foreign Social Sciences and other representatives of the journal held a theme discussion, and the backbone of the School of Marxism of Anhui University of Finance and Economics attended the meeting. Professor Zhang Bin, secretary of the General Party Branch and president of the school, presided over the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. The first session of the conference focused on three topics.

1. How do you understand that the 'second combination' is another ideological liberation?

Around this new judgment, the experts and scholars at the meeting expressed their opinions. Zhao Tao, chief editor of the Journal of Jianghai, pointed out that the second combination is a very high proposal. Yang Hongyuan, a researcher at the Institute of Philosophy of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, pointed out that the understanding of the second combination should grasp three pairs of relations: The first is the relationship between root and soul, civilization and culture; the second is the relationship between observance and innovation, law and purpose; and the third is the relationship between autonomy and external reference, China and the world.  Professor Wang Cheng of the School of Marxism at Anhui University of Finance and Economics pointed out that we should look for the possibility of a second combination with critical thinking.

2. Grasp the key scope of building the modern civilization of the Chinese nation

Professor Zhao Chengfei of Southeast University combed through the evolutionary history of the framework of Western democratic modernity and the eventual formation of the discourse system. Professor Wang Haobin of Nanjing University suggested that to build a modern political civilization for the Chinese nation, it is necessary to grasp the five core concepts of democracy, nation, people, class and political party. Professor Xu Jia, editor-in-chief of Journal of Southeast University (Philosophy and Social Science Edition), pointed out that the modernization of traditional culture is an important element in building the modern civilization of the Chinese nation, and analyzed how traditional ethics can move towards modernization by taking Liang Qichao's sense of ethics as an example.

3. Modern Civilization of the Chinese Nation and the New Form of Human Civilization

Researcher Xuan Chuanshu, secretary of the Party Committee of the Graduate School of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, pointed out that since the 18th National Congress of the People's Republic of China (PRC), the Party's theoretical innovations have been very numerous, and their internal relationships need to be further clarified. Professor Zhang Xiaojing of Anhui University of Finance and Economics pointed out that the Communist Party of China has nurtured, developed and improved the new form of human civilization in the course of its past century.

The second stage of the meeting focused on the frontiers of the Marxist discipline and the evaluation mechanism of the results. Professor Wang Cheng, vice president of our college, presided over the seminar, and the participating experts and scholars met face to face with the young teachers, positively commented on their academic results, and put forward targeted suggestions around how to do a good job in scientific research.

Xuan Chuanshu, Secretary of the Graduate School of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, made a summary of the meeting and fully affirmed the specifications and results of the meeting. Zhang Bin thanked the participating experts for their teaching for young teachers, thanked the participating experts for their support for the construction of the School of Marxism in Anhui University of Finance and Economics and put forward specific requirements for the construction of the school's disciplines:First, all participating teachers should take the opinions and suggestions made by the experts seriously and polish the papers and declarations patiently and meticulously; second, they should transform the spirit of the meeting into research content as soon as possible; the third is to take the opportunity of this conference to further strengthen the discipline construction of our school, form a normal academic exchange, and build a high-level platform for the development of our school.
